Friars Win 2nd Straight CHSHL Title


The Friars are champs again! With their championship win over Monsignor Farrell, they won back to back championships in only their 3rd year in the league. The Friars beat the Lions in a clean sweep at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon. After a 4-2 victory in Game 1 of the finals, the Friars were using the goal of a second straight title to inspire them to win and win and win. And they did exactly that.

In Game 2, Farrell’s John Pallis beat St. Anthony’s goalie Sean Keating just 1 minute into the game to start off the scoring in the game. However, that lead wouldn’t last long enough. Friar’s forward Chris Wallace scored on a breakaway chance with 9 minutes left in the 1st period. But the scoring didn’t stop with that goal. Defenseman Jimmy Mazza fed a pass to Chris Wallace who scored for a shorthanded goal, only a couple of minutes after the Friars first goal and that goal gave a 2-1 lead for the Friars. Again, Friars forward Mike Marnell tallied another goal with 6 minutes left in the 1st period to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. Again, though, Farrell didn’t give up. Chris Gambardella scoring a goal, only 40 seconds after Marnell’s tally, cut the Friars lead to 3-2 once again. But the Friars consistent forward Mike Marnell got his second straight goal and ended the crazy 1st period with the Friars having a 4-2 lead over the Lions.

The 2nd period was a little less productive but the Friars found scoring once again from Senior Evan Katz who scored a goal with 8 minutes left in the 2nd. Sean Keating helped keep the Friars at a comfortable lead with a breakaway save off Farrell’s Sean Gargin.

After a penalty shot was awarded to Sean Gargin, he did beat Sean Keating this time and cut the Friars lead to 5-3. However, Friar’s Chris Sabanos scored the empty net goal to assure the win for the Friars and the championship.
Although the Friars were celebrating their 2nd consecutive CHSHL title, they will compete in the CHSAA state championship in Buffalo, NY. The Friars will either play with St. Francis or St. Joseph’s in the title game on March 6. The Friars will be in the State Championship for the second straight year and Friars goalie Sean Keating is looking forward to the game. “It’s gonna be a tough battle but I think we’re gonna play good hockey and all of us are going to contribute to a solid win.”

Hopefully, Sean’s hopeful statement will inspire other teammates to play focused and determined. Let’s go Friars!!

St. Anthony's Friars vs. St. Domenic Bayhawks (Senior Night)

Friday Night was the scene of one of the most intense basketball games so far for the Boys Varsity Basketball Team. The Friars dominated the St. Domenic Bayhawks with a final score of 80 – 45 after leading throughout the entire game. The game started off immediately with determination by Senior Forward, James McKenna (#32) and Senior Captain, Marko Peraica (#33). With the score 9-3, Guard, Steven Pandales (#5) helped to widen the lead to 11-3 with 5 minutes remaining. Guards Andre Walker (#11) and Durelle Napier (#12) also provided support by propelling the Friars to a score of 22-10 by the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd Quarter also showed the same general trend, with Marko making all of his foul shots, the Friars led the Bayhawks by a score of 38-21 by the end of the quarter.

The 3rd Quarter finished with a score of 60-33 with the Friars continuing to lead. By the 4th Quarter, the Friars continued to lead with two notable points in the quarter. One was a fantastic breakaway and layup by Junior Forward Daniel Pierro (#15) and the second was an incredible 3-point shot made by Senior Forward James McKenna (#32) as a St. Domenic player was shoving him out of the court. Both got the crowd going and further increased the lead to 70-34. The game was finished off by a tough effort by Guards Durelle Napier (#12), Nigel Carter (#35), Terrence McKeever (#1), and Steven Pandales (#5) with a series of great layups and fouls shots. Other notable players on the team included Kris Teape (#13) and James Hurt (#44). The game ended with a score of 80 - 45 and a clearly excited team of Friars.

After the game, I asked Coach Jim Fenton, his opinion on the night’s performance and what he looks for from the team in the future. He stated that, “I’m happy with the effort! We played some intense basketball which is a reflection from what the team has shown in practices.” In regards to my second question he stated, “We need to try and elevate the intensity and be prepared for tough opponents in the games to come.” These words show how dedicated the team is to succeeding this season and explains their outstanding results thus far! We can only hope for continued success for the Boys Varsity Basketball Team in future games and in the playoffs!

Friar Pep Rally

The St. Anthony’s Winter Pep Rally was wonderful. Once again St. Anthony's did a great job organizing the Pep Rally. The whole St Anthony’s student body was there to cheer on the winter teams and have fun. The Emcee, Cheerleaders, Kickline, and Step Team were all fantastic, but the Freshmen Basketball team was not to great considering the fact that they lost 10 to 0 to the teachers. I do not think that they were too happy about that. The sophomores, juniors, and seniors had fun chanting, “Stand Up Freshmen” and throwing whatever they could find at the freshmen on the floor. I was sitting on the floor and next to me there were three sophomores and through the whole Pep Rally they were complaining about how they should be on the bleacher. It was pretty funny to listen to them talk about how much there butt hurt. Anyway the 2011 Winter Pep Rally was great. I had fun and I am sure that everyone else had fun too. The Pep Rally got everyone psyched for the Hawaiian Night Varsity Basketball Game which the Friars Won 55 to 44 against Kellenberg. Go Friars!

Hawaiian Night

On Friday St.Anthony's held its Winter Pep Rally, and its theme was Hawaii. At 7:30, the Varsity Boys Basketball Team was playing Kellenberg at home. Similar to pajama night,the half time show was conducted by both some of the male students in conjunction with the cheerleaders.
At the end of the half the score was 22 all, and the Friars were playing strong. Going into the fourth quarter we were winning 29-27. Then with 6 minutes remaining we drew a couple of fouls which pushed our lead to 36-32. Then due to a steal by Kellenberg they had a 2 v 1 against the Friars Dan Pierrot, in which he somehow rejected the lay up and put the Friars back onto offense in which #32 knocked down a dagger 3 pointer. In the game #32 has been consistently knocking down 3's. He had over 12 points on the day, all of which came from 3 pointers. #33, Marko Peraica also had an excellent finish with more than 8 points with under 6 minutes left in the game.
The Friars ended up knocking off the Kellenberg Firebirds 55 to 44.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team began their season with a terrific start. They held a record of 15 wins and only 2 losses, one of which came last saturday. Then with less than 24 hours later they played Mount Vernon in the JFK tournament in the Bronx, and the Friars were looking to get back to their winning ways,and they certainly accomplished this by winning by more than 30 points. The final score was 82-50.
The Friars whose team is filled with depth, was led by Kerrin Maurer with 15 points, 12 assists and 5 steals. Micki Impellizeri also had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Kelly and Kimani Jackson each had 9 points in the game as well. At the half the Friars led by 43 to 28 going into the half.
Despite Mount Vernons size under the hoop the Friars still managed to penetrate their defense and make 26 lay ups. The Friars seized control early and maintained their control with ease for the remainder of the game.

SAHS vs. CHAMINADE

Every year, Saint Anthony’s High School hosts a boys Varsity Basketball
game, where many of the students dress in their favorite pajamas. The
Kickline and Varsity Cheerleaders dress in matching pajamas with their
partners, and they perform for the crowd.

As the game commenced, both teams started off strong. The first basket
for the Friars was made by #43, who shot off a perfect 3-pointer. #12 of
the Flyers also got a 3-pointer as well. Flyer #12 continued to show his 3
point skills, getting 3 in the game, with 2 in the first two quarters.
The Friars were leading in the first half with 33 points to the Flyer’s
24 points.

Going into the 4th quarter, the Friars were down by 4, with 47-43 Chaminade. With 4 minutes remaining the Friars were down again by 4,then our defense forced 2 crucial turnovers but unfortunately they were unable to capitalize.

Although the Friar’s fought hard, they lost most of their points due to
foul shots, either by the Flyer’s making them, or the Friars not making
them. Flyer #12 was also hard to guard, as his 3 point range was very
impressive.They recieved great support from the Friar Faithful and the stands.However,The Friars ended up losing the game,but look to improve as the
season continues.
