The St. Anthony's Football Team Wins the CHSFL Championship Concluding a Perfect Undefeated Season!!!

Congratulations Friars on your Championship Victory over Iona Prep! With a score of 41-23, the Friars beat the Gaels on Saturday to win the Michael Cunnion Trophy as CHSFL Champions! Below is their article.

Phenomenal!!! An appropriate word to describe the Varsity Football Team’s undefeated 11-0 season. On Saturday, November 20th, the Friars beat the Iona Prep Gaels with a score of 41-23 in the CHSFL AAA Championship Game at Mitchell Stadium in Uniondale. When asked about his feelings before the game, quarterback, Charlie Raffa said, “ We’re excited! The goal is to score a lot of touchdowns and win big against Iona.” Coach Rich Reichert said to his players during practice, “The two key words to today’s game are to focus and finish. Don’t look by any team,” and the Friars definitely listened to his advice.
The game started out with a quick touchdown from a pass from quarterback, Charlie Raffa (#7), to star wide receiver, Brian Kensil (#14). After which, defensive backs, Tyler McLees (#33) and Tim Stackpole (#11) stopped two Iona drives to the end zone giving the ball back to our offense. Running back Joe LoCascio (#9) ran an astounding 30 yard sprint towards the end zone to set up a touchdown by Mike Schillizzi (#40) on the next play. With the score 13-6, Raffa set Kensil up for another two touchdowns, making the score 27-16. Going into the 2nd half, the Friars continued to show success through their defense players. Senior Jonathan Desir (#77) and Junior Durelle Napier (#38) quickly stopped the progression of the Gaels to allow Charlie Raffa to set up a play to Junior Brian Sherlock (#34). One of those plays spurred an incredible 63 yard pass from Raffa to Sherlock leading Sherlock to score an amazing touchdown, making the score 34-16.
The game ended with a 41-23 victory for the Friars, who held the coveted Michael Cunnion Memorial Trophy proudly at the end of the game and sang their team song. With a flawless undefeated season and a 2nd straight title, the team couldn’t be happier after their hard earned win. After the game, I asked Senior Joe LoCascio, what he thought of the results of this past season. He said, “ We’ve definitely exceeded our expectations and could not have asked for a better turnout.” Junior Brian Sherlock added after being asked how well the team did this season, “I think we did pretty well. We had great practices and a strong team. It was good Sheppy!” Definitely a true statement! This season has concluded excellently for the team and with all of the returning Juniors, next season will prove to be just as amazing! Go Friars!
